Winter 2005/2006

We went on an early winter hike up in the hills along the Chena Hot Springs Road.

It looked like it was going to be a winter with plenty of snow.

The landscape was enchanting and we enjoyed the hike up to Angel Rocks.

Then the harsh realities of Fairbanks winter set in along with the hoarfrost in the outhouse.

The ice fog settled in Fairbanks and the temperatures dropped in January.

It was a wee bit cold.

And we realized our window glaciers recede when it's above 20 below,
but grow quite quickly when it the outside temperature dips lower.
As you can see, we were in the middle of a substantial ice age at one point.

But JJ and I were able to explore some new places such as the Denali Highway.
JJ and Bill on a snowmachine supported Sandy and I during a 120 mile training run with the dogs.

And the Alaska Range provided a spectacular backdrop for this and a few other excursions.

February brought the start of the Yukon Quest to Fairbanks and
we caught Lance Mackey (on the left in the green) talking to a reporter before the race start.

The Quest started in Downtown Fairbanks along the Chena River and traveled 1000 miles into the Yukon.

Logan had a challenging winter with surgery on his ACL and then a minor surgery
to remove a cyst on his forehead. He did get outside occassionally
to "set" for some grouse in our driveway.
